First Line Fridays

There’s a reason the saying “judge a book by it’s cover” exists. But what about judging by a book’s opening lines? First Lines Fridays aims to get readers hooked on the first lines of a book BEFORE its details are revealed. It’s a fun way to step out of your comfort zone and discover new genres and authors.

First Lines Fridays is a feature hosted by Wandering Words. If you want to make your own post, feel free to use Wandering Words’ banner or make your own, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read, an old favorite, or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Don’t forget to tag your post with #FirstLinesFridays! Share a link to your post below, or just tell me if this first line makes you want to try out the book!

When Elena told people she was a vampire hunter, their first reaction was an inevitable gasp, followed by, “You go around sticking those sharp stakes in their evil putrid hearts?”
Okay, maybe the actual words varied but the feel was the same. It made her want to track down and exterminate the idiot fifteenth-century storyteller who’d made up that tale in the first place.
Curious what book it’s from? Keep reading to find out…

Teaser Tuesdays: The Sea King

IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER TEASER TUESDAY!

This feature (or meme) is one I originally discovered on my friend Kim’s site Book Munchies, and is hosted by The Purple Booker. For those of you who would like to play along at home–or more specifically on your homepage–here is how Teaser Tuesdays work.

  • Grab a current read and open it to a random page
  • Share a couple “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!
    • Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others

There were too many good lines in this book, so I included a few of my favs!

Cast in Honor (Chronicles of Elantra, #11) by Michelle Sagara

Paperback, 512 pages
Publisher: Mira
Release Date: November 24, 2015
ISBN# 9780778318590
Page(s): …

“I just told you–” Kaylin caught up. “You’re telling me me they’re significant in the Aerie.”

“I’m trying to tell you that, yes.” To Teela, he said, “Did you have these issues when you introduced Kaylin to the High Halls?”

“Not these specific ones, no. The Barrani Halls are slightly simpler. Everyone you meet is going to try to kill you at one point or another; she only had to try to avoid the ones who were going to do so immediately.” (95)

Mandoran entered the dining room, as well. “No,” he told everyone, “I am not staying behind.” He looked at Kaylin as he spoke.

She held up both hands. “Don’t look at me like that — I wasn’t even going to suggest it.”

“Teela did.”

“Then glare at Teela. I don’t even like the fiefs.” (143)

“Did she mention our latest investigation?”

“Yes. She also extended an invitation to dinner. Do not stand in the library gawking. If you have something to say, say it while we walk.”    …

Kaylin’s biggest question, as she followed the Arkon’s impatient lead, was Yes, but are you going to accept? (175)

“Are they always like this?” Kattea whispered.

“Yes. And they can hear you two rooms away, even if you whisper.”

“Oh. I don’t like him.”

“Mandoran?”

“Is that his name?”

“It’s the polite version.”

“What’s the rude version?” (257)

Hah! I LOVE this series. This book has many more great lines/scenes but I’ll stop with these.

“Don’t move,” the cop behind the gun warned. “Or you’ll taste lead.”

What happened to the right to remain silent and all that crap? That they didn’t even bother to say the words meant they were after us specifically.

Stars of Fortune (The Guardians Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts

Paperback, 304 pages
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: November 3rd, 2015
ISBN# 9780425280102

She kept up, well enough, but squats, lunges, jumping jacks with Annika smiling, even letting out an occasional laugh, as she herself struggled through them — without even a single hit of coffee — made Sasha want to try out her right jab on her friend’s beautiful face…

“I hate you.” She could barely pant it out. “Especially Doyle, but all of you.”

“That’s a start. Who’s on breakfast detail?” Doyle asked.

“The chart’s in my room. Someone who can still walk should go get it.”

“I’ll get it.” Annika, barely winded, dashed off.

From her prone position, Sasha bared her teeth. “Maybe I hate her even more than Doyle.”

(LOL, that is so me when exercising!) Now, this one I just started!!

The Immortal Heights (Elemental Trilogy, #3) by Sherry Thomas

Hardcover, 432 pages
Publisher: Balzar + Bray

Behind them, Kashkari had set up a spectacle: a dozen carpets floated end to end in midair, and several rebels made tumbling passes across the length of this makeshift stage.

“I’m tempted to neglect my task and watch that instead,” said Fairfax. “And my life is on the line here.”

“I teach a lot of little cats,” she reminded him in a prim, schoolteacher voice. “I might not be an expert on changeling behavior, but I’ve picked up enough to know that when in animal form, you behave according to the needs of the animal.”

He couldn’t help himself. He turned and snapped his teeth at her, making her jump. When he began to chuckle, her eyes narrowed. “You’re as bad as Bryan. He does that to Katie all the time.”

“Odds on, he has a crush on her.”

Her lips twitched. “That’s what I think, too.”

I stared into the murky clouds. After being in Freya’s realm, the world of the dwarves seemed oppressive, but it also seemed more familiar … more genuine. I guess no true Bostonian would trust a place that was sunny and pleasant all the time. But a gritty, perpetually cold and gloomy neighborhood? Throw in a couple of Dunkin’ Donuts location, and I’m right at home.
