Teaser Tuesdays: Once Upon a Winter’s Night

Teaser Tuesdays

It’s time for another “Teaser Tuesday!”

This feature (or meme)  is one I originally discovered on my friend Kim’s site Book Munchies, and is hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm. For those of you who would like to play along at home (or more specifically on your homepage), here is how Teaser Tuesdays work.

– Grab (one of) your current read(s) and open it to a random page
– Share a couple “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
– BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Glancing back at Camille and receiving a nod, he placed a shoulder against the rattling planks to brace against the wind and lifted the clattering latch and eased the door on its leather-strap hinges open a crack, putting his eye to the narrow space as a snow-bearing sheet of wind swirled in. “Ai!” he wailed and slammed the door to and crashed the bar down into its brackets.

“What is it Papa?” cried the children at the fire as they leapt to their feet and clustered, all clutching one another for support, the mother standing and shrinking back against the trembling knot of girls.

“That is so awesome! But, um, is there any way you could maybe bring it over for us right now? I’ll owe you a nice warm batch of chocolate chip cookies…”

“What the hell. I can bring it over for you. Had thought about spending this afternoon bodysurfing with a special lady friend–but whatever. Driving used athletic gear across town works too. Oh, and one other thing: No chocolate chip. Snickerdoodles. Nonnegotiable.”

“How often do people say thank you to you?”

Veronica swallowed her mouthful of coffee and cleared her throat. “‘Thank you’ ranks just below ‘You ruined my life’ and just above ‘When I get my hands on you.'”

Perhaps you have some questions for me.

Where was the locker?
It was in the math hallway. The hallway also contained TV cameras and reality stars and the love of my life.

Was the locker locked?
We’ll get to that.

Oh and by the way, WHY? Why in the name of God-slash-Buddha-slash-Zeus, in the name of all things holy, WHY, why, why, why? WHY were you IN A LOCKER?
Yeah, that was going through my head too.”

Once again, I’ve got 2 books to tease today; the first is an oldie-but-goodie. I decided to re-read the series since I never finished the last book (I know, I know, “I can’t believe you never finished it!” But in my defense, I enjoyed it so much I just didn’t want it to be over!) The second came out earlier this year and it just tugged at my heartstrings until I picked it up. Hope you enjoy these teasers!

“I looked over what I wrote, and my stomach dropped. This was a joke, right? Katherine didn’t just have twelve kids, but twelve boys! I knew nothing, absolutely nothing about the male species. I went to a private school for girls! How was I ever going to survive living in a house full of boys?”

Page: 48

“During the twenty-minute drive to school, I received a crash course in Boys 101 and decided that maybe the male species wasn’t so different from females after all. To sum it up, the Walters gossiped worse than the girls at my old boarding school.”

“Every night he’d spent in Confinement, he’d fallen asleep dreaming about arriving on Earth with Clarke. But instead of holding her hand while they gazed at the planet in wonder, he’d spent the day sorting through burned supplies and trying to forget the expression that crossed Clarke’s face when she spotted him. He hadn’t expected her to throw her arms around him, but nothing could have prepared him for the look of pure loathing in her eyes.”
