“Waiting On” Wednesdays: The Hidden Oracle

Waiting on Wednesdays

Waiting on Wednesdays is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine. The purpose is to spotlight upcoming book releases that we are excited for.

The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, #1) by Rick Riordan

Hardcover, 376 pages
Publication Date: May 3rd, 2016
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
ISBN: 9781484732748
Add it: To your TBR Pile or your “Want to Read” list on Goodreads.

How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus’s favour.

But Apollo has many enemies – gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

What can I say?  It’s Rick Riordan, and a continuation of Percy Jackson’s world. OF COURSE I want to read this book!!! LOL Sorry if I’m a bit too excited for some of you, but I can’t really care too much. These books are really that good. What I’m looking forward to with the start of this new series is that we’re getting the perspective of one of the Gods! Apollo takes center stage and that change in viewpoint is HUGE. I do hope we get the opportunity to see some of the characters from past books. I’d really like to know if Leo ever made it home. But even if it’s got a whole new set of Demigods I bet they’ll be just as cool as their predecessors. Combine Riordan’s trademark humor with his irreverent interpretation of the Ancient Greek and Roman myths, and I just know this will be another epic series!

Teaser Tuesdays: Cast in Honor

Teaser Tuesdays

It’s time for another “Teaser Tuesday!”

This feature (or meme)  is one I originally discovered on my friend Kim’s site Book Munchies, and is hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm. For those of you who would like to play along at home (or more specifically on your homepage), here is how Teaser Tuesdays work.

– Grab (one of) your current read(s) and open it to a random page
– Share a couple “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
– BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

—> Now on to the main event!

There were too many good lines in this book, so I included a few of my favs!

Cast in Honor (Chronicles of Elantra, #11) by Michelle Sagara

Paperback, 512 pages
Publisher: Mira
Release Date: November 24, 2015
ISBN# 9780778318590
Page(s): …

“I just told you–” Kaylin caught up. “You’re telling me me they’re significant in the Aerie.”

“I’m trying to tell you that, yes.” To Teela, he said, “Did you have these issues when you introduced Kaylin to the High Halls?”

“Not these specific ones, no. The Barrani Halls are slightly simpler. Everyone you meet is going to try to kill you at one point or another; she only had to try to avoid the ones who were going to do so immediately.” (95)

Mandoran entered the dining room, as well. “No,” he told everyone, “I am not staying behind.” He looked at Kaylin as he spoke.

She held up both hands. “Don’t look at me like that — I wasn’t even going to suggest it.”

“Teela did.”

“Then glare at Teela. I don’t even like the fiefs.” (143)

“Did she mention our latest investigation?”

“Yes. She also extended an invitation to dinner. Do not stand in the library gawking. If you have something to say, say it while we walk.”    …

Kaylin’s biggest question, as she followed the Arkon’s impatient lead, was Yes, but are you going to accept? (175)

“Are they always like this?” Kattea whispered.

“Yes. And they can hear you two rooms away, even if you whisper.”

“Oh. I don’t like him.”

“Mandoran?”

“Is that his name?”

“It’s the polite version.”

“What’s the rude version?” (257)

Hah! I LOVE this series. This book has many more great lines/scenes but I’ll stop with these.

Yay for two books I recently got from the library. This one I just finished…

Stars of Fortune (The Guardians Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts

Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: November 3rd, 2015
ISBN# 9780425280102
Page: 233 – 234

She kept up, well enough, but squats, lunges, jumping jacks with Annika smiling, even letting out an occasional laugh, as she herself struggled through them — without even a single hit of coffee — made Sasha want to try out her right jab on her friend’s beautiful face…

“I hate you.” She could barely pant it out. “Especially Doyle, but all of you.”

“That’s a start. Who’s on breakfast detail?” Doyle asked.

“The chart’s in my room. Someone who can still walk should go get it.”

“I’ll get it.” Annika, barely winded, dashed off.

From her prone position, Sasha bared her teeth. “Maybe I hate her even more than Doyle.”

(LOL, that is so me when exercising!) Now, this one I just started!!

The Immortal Heights (Elemental Trilogy, #3) by Sherry Thomas

Hardcover, 432 pages
Publisher: Balzar + Bray
Release Date: October 13th, 2015
ISBN# 9780062207357

Behind them, Kashkari had set up a spectacle: a dozen carpets floated end to end in midair, and several rebels made tumbling passes across the length of this makeshift stage.

“I’m tempted to neglect my task and watch that instead,” said Fairfax. “And my life is on the line here.”

I hadn’t thought myself particularly closemouthed. Actually, I’d been accused of having a smart mouth. Samuel had told me more than once that I’d probably live longer if I learned to bite my tongue occasionally.

Cuddles ignored me and the vampire, defiantly clopping passed it. The bloodsucker turned smoothly and fell into step next to me. “Where is your… significant other?”

“He’s around.” He was never too far. “Why, are you worried he’ll find out about this romantic rendezvous?”

The vampire froze for a second. “What?”

“You’re meeting me in secret on a lonely street in the middle of the night…”

Ghastek’s voice was so sharp, if it were a knife, I would have been sliced to ribbons. “I find your attempts at humor greatly distressing.”

Hee-hee.

So I love Yelena and Valek, I really do. But seriously, I get the most excited for the other two guys in this teaser. They are so much fun!

Shadow Study (Soulfinder, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

Paperback, 416 pages
Publisher: Mira
Release Date: February 24th, 2015
ISBN# 9780778317401
Page: 29

“He told me about it later, Valek,” Ari said. “Nothing I could do about it at that point.” His long-suffering tone said more than his words.

“Your prank failed to work.” Valek ladeled stew into a deep bowl.

“Oh?” Janco didn’t sound convinced.

“Captain Broghan recognized you from your basic-training days.”

Janco stabbed his fork in the air. “I knew he looked familiar, didn’t I, Ari?”

“You said her resembled your second-cousin.”

LOL! And here’s one from a series I just started, but I’m already getting into it. It’s not what I was expecting!

Rising Darkness (Game of Shadows, #1) by Thea Harrison

Mass Market Paperback, 384 pages
Publisher: Berkley Sensation
Release Date: April 2nd, 2013
ISBN# 9780425248454
Page: 13

Early on that bright spring morning, Mary continued with obvious reluctance toward her ex-husband as he stood in front of her house.

“Oh that’s flattering of you,” Justin said with a grin. “Good thing my ego is so preened and shiny. Good morning, and screw you too.”

Here are a couple teasers from a new series (well, new to me) that I’ve fallen in love with: The Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh!

Angels’ Flight (Guild Hunter, #0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 3.5) by Nalini Singh

Mass Market Paperback, 345 pages
Publisher: Berkley Sensation
Release Date: February 28th, 2012
ISBN# 9780425246818
Page: 43

This teaser comes from the 1st of the 4 short stories in the collection: Angels’ Pawn…

Janvier shifted up a gear as they raced over Callan’s manicured lawns and crashing their way through a hedge or three.

Ashwini used the chance to reload her gun and twist her head around to check if Monique was still alive. The blonde vampire stared at her with eyes so round, the whites showed on every side. “You’re both insane.”

And here’s some more fun with Ashwini and Janvier, who get more viewing time in this latest novel of the series…

Archangel’s Shadows (Guild Hunter, #7) by Nalini Singh

Mass Market Paperback, 384 pages
Publisher: Berkley Sensation
Release Date: October 28th, 2014
ISBN# 9780425251171
Page: 20

Ashwini met the angel’s gaze. “Shall I plug my ears?” Hunters had fought alongside immortals in the battle to hold their city, would do so again should the situation call for it, but when it came to everyday existence, getting involved in Tower business could be perilous to a mortal’s health. “Or I can jump on the subway,” she offered, taking her hand of Janvier’s shoulder.

“No,” he said, at the same time that Illium spoke the word.

“There, cher,” Janvier added. “You would not break both our hearts, would you?”

Okay, so I work at a public library and can attest that these stories (while they may seem too impossible to be true) are extremely accurate to how life really is for someone who works on the front lines in a library. Enjoy!

 Rude, How

A woman approached the interior book return slot.

Woman: [peering in] Hello?

Me: Hi!

Woman: I was talking to the person at the other book drop but he was ignoring me, how rude!

Me: I’m so sorry, there is no one manning the outside book drop. Is there anything I can help you with?

Woman: Oh dear. Well I was just asking him the difference between DVDs and CDs and could they all go in the same slot. Anyway, are DVDs those iPaddy things?

Me: Well, DVDs are movies. CDs are music or books to listen to. iPads are different.

Woman: How confusing! No wonder the fellow at the other book drop ignored me!

Harry Potter Moment of the Week #29

This Week’s Theme: Best Hogwarts teacher

This probably should be harder than it actually is. But I’m incredibly biased towards one teacher in particular:

Minerva McGonagall, aka the Sass-Mistress of Hogwarts

McGonagall and Hedwig

There are many reasons why I think she’s an incredible teacher. Aside from her obvious general brilliance as a witch, she’s a master of her chosen subject, Transfiguration (although, so are most of the other teachers at Hogwarts.)

“Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts,” she said. “Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned.” (Sorcerer’s Stone, Chapter 8)

mcgonagall cat transfiguration

She’s incredibly fair. (Some Gryffindor students might suggest a little too fair!) She doesn’t consider a students house when it comes to following or breaking the rules. She is able to maintain a sense of neutrality when awarding points or punishing infractions. She puts the wellfare of her students first, and she uses her iron will to force other around her to do the same. McGonagall Sheer Dumb LuckMcGonagall and the ferret

I think one of the things that sets her apart from other teachers is that she is able to get to know and understand exactly who her students are and uses that to bring out the best in them. Or at the very least she helps them get to a place where they realize she cares about their well-being, even though it might not look like it on the surface.

She’s strong, she’s compassionate, and she goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that her students have a safe place where they can learn their craft. She doesn’t let anyone, child or adult, push her around.

“Really, Severus,” said Professor McGonagall sharply. “I see no reason to stop the boy playing Quidditch. This cat wasn’t hit over the head with a broomstick. There is no evidence at all that Potter has done anything wrong.” (Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 9)

McGonagall obviouslyMcGonagall teachingAnd as a bonus, she’s a complete Sassy-Mc-Sasspants!

“Well, usually when a person shakes their head,” said McGonagall coldly, “they mean ‘no’. So unless Miss Edgecombe is using a form of sign-language as yet unknown to humans –” (Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 27)

“My grandmother thinks Charms is a soft option,” mumbled Neville.
“Take Charms,” said Professor McGonagall, “and I shall drop Augusta a line reminding her that just because she failed her Charms O.W.L., the subject is not necessarily worthless.” (Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 9)

So Professor McGonagall. I say you’re the best Hogwarts teacher. What do you have to say for yourself??

McGonagall comforting Trelawney

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on who you think the best Hogwarts teacher is/was in the comments below!

I’m so in love with both of my books this week. Anne Bishop has been my favorite author for over a decade, and Ilona Andrews is a new favorite (but is just as wonderful.) I’m squeezing all the awesome I can into this post!

Vision in Silver (The Others, #3) by Anne Bishop

Hardcover, 400 pages
Publisher: Penguin Publishing Group
Release Date: March 3rd, 2015
ISBN# 9780451465276
Page: 13

“I see.” And he did see. Label anyone who wanted to keep peace between humans and the terra indigene as a Wolf lover, especially if that person directly interacted with the Others in any capacity, and force those people to choose between having a job and feeding their families, and opposing the fools who would provoke a fight that would end with many, many humans dead or driven out of the city.

And here’s a slightly longer teaser from Magic Breaks, because the whole scene just made me crack up:

Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels, #7) by Ilona Andrews

Hardcover, 348 pages
Publisher: Ace Hardcover
Release Date: July 29th, 2014
ISBN# 9780425256220
Page: 78

Robert gaped at me. Desandra make a weird face: her right eyebrow crept up, her left went down, and her mouth got stuck somewhere between surprise and the beginning of the word “what/” Derek’s mouth opened and didn’t close until we came to a halt next to him.

“What the hell is this?” Desandra asked.

“This is Cuddles. She’s a mammoth donkey.”

Derek grinned, leaning on the fence. “Do you have any self-respect left?”

“Nope.”

“I think she’s cute.” Desandra reached out.

Cuddles promptly tried to bite her. Desandra jerked her hand away and bared her teeth. “Donkey, you don’t know who you’re messing with. I’ll eat you for breakfast.”

“Where to now?” I asked.
