“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Age of Myth

Age of MythAge of Myth (The Legends of the First Empire, #1) by Michael J. Sullivan

Hardcover, 418 pages
Publication Date: Jun. 28th, 2016
Publisher: Del Rey
ISBN: 9781101965337

What does it mean if the gods can be killed? The first novel in an epic new fantasy series for readers of Brent Weeks, Brandon Sanderson, Peter V. Brett, and Scott Lynch.

Michael J. Sullivan’s trailblazing career began with the breakout success of his Riyria series: full-bodied, spellbinding fantasy adventures whose imaginative scope and sympathetic characters won a devoted readership. Now, Sullivan’s stunning hardcover debut, Age of Myth, inaugurates an original five-book series, and one of fantasy’s finest next-generation storytellers continues to break new ground.

Since time immemorial, humans have worshiped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between men and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now, only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer, Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom, and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over; the time of rebellion has begun.

Mostly I picked this one out because I was drawn in by the cover. LOL! Call me shallow, but I really liked the tree and the whole fantasy-esque look. Then when I read the description, I loved the idea of a god dying by a human hand. Of rebellion and this really interesting world that Sullivan is putting together.

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Bay of Sighs

Waiting on Wednesdays

Bay of Sighs (The Guardians Trilogy, #2) by Nora Roberts

Paperback, 352 pages
Publication Date: Jun. 14th, 2016
Publisher: Berkley
ISBN: 9780425280119
Add it: To your TBR Pile or your “Want to Read” list on Goodreads.

To celebrate the rise of their new queen, three goddesses of the moon created three stars, one of fire, one of ice, one of water. But then they fell from the sky, putting the fate of all worlds in danger. And now three women and three men join forces to pick up the pieces…

Mermaid Annika is from the sea, and it is there she must return after her quest to find the stars. New to this world, her purity and beauty are nothing less than breathtaking, along with her graceful athleticism, as her five new friends discovered when they retrieved the fire star.

Now, through space and time, traveler Sawyer King has brought the guardians to the island of Capri, where the water star is hidden. And as he watches Annika in her element, he finds himself drawn to her joyful spirit. But Sawyer knows that if he allows her into his heart, no compass could ever guide him back to solid ground…

And in the darkness, their enemy broods. She lost one star to the guardians, but there is still time for blood to be spilled—the mermaid’s in the water and the traveler’s on the land. For she has forged a dangerous new weapon. Something deadly and unpredictable. Something human.

I love me some Nora Roberts. Especially when she does trilogies and series with a bit of magic in them. With this new trilogy, I really enjoyed the mythology she’s cooked up to get all these lovers together. And while some people probably find her stories too formulaic, that’s one of the qualities I like about her work. I know I’m going to get something that feels both familiar and new all at the same time. I’m really curious about this second book because the focus is on two characters with peculiar and mysterious backgrounds and I’m excited to explore them. This is a perfect beach read, just in time for summer!

PS. Happy Birthday to my baby sister today!!!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Allegiance of Honor

Allegiance of Honor (Psy-Changeling, #15) by Nalini Singh

Hardcover, 496 pages
Publication Date: Jun. 14th, 2016
Publisher: Berkley
ISBN: 9781101987766

The “unparalleled romantic adventure”* of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as a new dawn begins for the Psy-Changeling world…

The Psy-Changeling world has undergone a staggering transformation and now stands at a crossroads. The Trinity Accord promises a new era of cooperation between disparate races and groups. It is a beacon of hope held together by many hands: Old enemies. New allies. Wary loners.

But a century of distrust and suspicion can’t be so easily forgotten and threatens to shatter Trinity from within at any moment. As rival members vie for dominance, chaos and evil gather in the shadows and a kidnapped woman’s cry for help washes up in San Francisco, while the Consortium turns its murderous gaze toward a child who is the embodiment of change, of love, of piercing hope: A child who is both Psy…and changeling.

To find the lost, protect the vulnerable—and save Trinity—no one can stand alone. This is a time of loyalty across divisions, of bonds woven into the heart and the soul, of heroes known and unknown standing back to back and holding the line. But is an allegiance of honor even possible with traitors lurking in their midst?

This is an extensive paranormal romance series and I’ve only recently caught up with it. I love Singh’s abilities to fully-realized fantasy backdrops for her characters to interact in. The history between the varied races in this world is so detailed and complex and plays beautifully into the story-arch that continues throughout the whole series. I’m really excited to see where the series goes next!!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: The Long Game

Waiting on Wednesdays

The Long Game (The Fixer, #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Hardcover, 368 pages
Publication Date: Jun. 7th, 2016
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
ISBN: 9781619635968

Tess Kendrick, teen fixer extraordinaire, returns in a pulse-pounding thriller about a deadly conspiracy at the heart of Washington.

For Tess Kendrick, a junior at the elite Hardwicke School in Washington D.C., fixing runs in the family. But Tess has another legacy, too, one that involves power and the making of political dynasties. When Tess is asked to run a classmate’s campaign for student council, she agrees. But when the candidates are children of politicians, even a high school election can involve life-shattering secrets.

Meanwhile, Tess’s guardian has also taken on an impossible case, as a terrorist attack calls into doubt who can–and cannot–be trusted on Capitol Hill. Tess knows better than most that power is currency in D.C., but she’s about to discover first-hand that power always comes with a price.

Perfect for fans of Harlan Coben and Ally Carter, the second book in this thrilling series will leave readers breathless.

I think the first book (The Fixer) seemed to come out of nowhere in how amazing it was, but I’d read Barnes’s Naturals series so I was aware of the twisty mind games she’s capable of playing on her audience. That being said, I was still blown away by how much I really enjoyed book 1. This one, I feel is going to up the stakes even more. Now that we know how tricksy some of these characters can be, I feel like things are just going to get deeper in their development and plot-wise Barnes can up the danger factor to bring on the thrills. AND I CAN’T WAIT! I love the way she builds suspense, and from the description (high school election, terrorist attacks, and power that comes with a price) there’s no way this book is going to disappoint. I say Bring. It. On! Sooner rather than later, lol!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: The Hidden Oracle

Waiting on Wednesdays

Waiting on Wednesdays is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine. The purpose is to spotlight upcoming book releases that we are excited for.

The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, #1) by Rick Riordan

Hardcover, 376 pages
Publication Date: May 3rd, 2016
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
ISBN: 9781484732748

How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus’s favour.

But Apollo has many enemies – gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

What can I say?  It’s Rick Riordan, and a continuation of Percy Jackson’s world. OF COURSE I want to read this book!!! LOL Sorry if I’m a bit too excited for some of you, but I can’t really care too much. These books are really that good. What I’m looking forward to with the start of this new series is that we’re getting the perspective of one of the Gods! Apollo takes center stage and that change in viewpoint is HUGE. I do hope we get the opportunity to see some of the characters from past books. I’d really like to know if Leo ever made it home. But even if it’s got a whole new set of Demigods I bet they’ll be just as cool as their predecessors. Combine Riordan’s trademark humor with his irreverent interpretation of the Ancient Greek and Roman myths, and I just know this will be another epic series!

A burning vengeance.

Adrian sul’Han, known as Ash, is a trained healer with a powerful gift of magic—and a thirst for revenge. The son of the queen of the Fells, Ash is forced into hiding after a series of murders throws the queendom into chaos. Now Ash is closer than he’s ever been to killing the man responsible, the cruel king of Arden. As a healer, can Ash use his powers not to save a life but to take it?

A blood-based curse.

Abandoned at birth, Jenna Bandelow was told the mysterious magemark on the back of her neck would make her a target. But when the King’s Guard launches a relentless search for a girl with a mark like hers, Jenna assumes that it has more to do with her role as a saboteur than any birth-based curse. Though Jenna doesn’t know why she’s being hunted, she knows that she can’t get caught.

Destiny’s fiery hand.

Eventually, Ash’s and Jenna’s paths will collide in Arden. Thrown together by chance and joined by their hatred of the king, they will come to rescue each other in ways they cannot yet imagine.

Set in the world of the acclaimed Seven Realms series a generation later, this is a thrilling story of dark magic, chilling threats, and two unforgettable characters walking a knife-sharp line between life and death.

Okay y’all I’ve been waiting for Cinda Williams Chima’s new series for like… 2 years. I can’t do it much longer!!! First, it is set in the Seven Realms world (my favorite of hers) and picks up 25 years from the end of the 1st series. Yay!!! I’m SO looking forward to seeing Han and Raisa again! Next, this new series feels similar in that it’s two major character viewpoints, and I loved the way she split the story the first time around. Things (plot-wise) also seem like they are going to get crazy really quick with these murders, and Jenna being hunted. Then there’s the fact that Chima’s just an AMAZING writer. She sucks me into her stories so quickly and holds me there with a death grip. And I love her for it!

Plus, have you looked at this cover?? Go on, I’ll give you a minute to stare at the pretty… *Deep breath and… Le sigh.* You know, I think I’ll just leave it at that.

Delilah Dirk and the Blades of England lands Delilah and Selim right in the middle of yet more crazy adventures. When Delilah is framed as a spy by an English army officer, her passion for revenge threatens to sever her friendship with Selim. Is she willing to lose the companionship of her only good friend in order to reclaim her reputation? Selim finally gets to see the England he has only imagined, but how will he feel when the combined strains of social conventions and Delilah’s thirst for revenge overwhelm his experience?

The first Delilah Dirk book was recommended to me by a friend and coworker. And I’m SO SO glad that she did. It’s a fantastic story about a pair of unlikely comrades and adventurers, Delilah and Selim. It was such a wonderful surprise, how much I enjoyed the story, and Cliff’s art is absolutely delightful, action-packed, and humorous. It started out as a web comic and was then turned into books. I’m really excited for this next adventure! If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend checking it out!

passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home . . . forever

Okay, yikes. Wednesday snuck up on me this week. But anyways, this sounds really interesting to me! I like that in this fantasy/sci-fi story (I’m not really clear which category this falls into yet) neither character appears all that powerful. Its kind of a nice change from a long string of stories I’ve been reading where characters have “powers they’ve never discovered before now” or are just really strong, or royalty so they have influence they can wield. These two don’t seem to have any of those things going for them, and yet they seem to be going on a quest of sorts — all of which is very cool. It will be interesting to see how they survive (if they survive) and how they will be helped on their journey.

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Truthwitch

Waiting on Wednesdays

Waiting on Wednesdays is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine. The purpose is to spotlight upcoming book releases that we are excited for.

Truthwitch (The Witchlands, #1) by Susan Dennard

Hardcover, 416 pages
Publication Date: Jan. 5th, 2015
Publisher: Tor Teen
ISBN: 9780765379283
Add it: To your TBR Pile or your “Want to Read” list on Goodreads.

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.

Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.

Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.

Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.

(This WoW is coming out a little late in the day today, guys, but that’s only because I just got to play with the CUTEST baby on the planet! My little ‘nephew’ Will! Yay!)

Okay, so the first reason that I want to read Truthwitch is, honestly, because Sarah J. Maas (one of my favorite writers) has highly recommended it, and I will give most anything she recommends a try. But second, the blurb about the story sounds fantastic! I like the idea that this fantasy might be focusing on the friendship of these two girls, which is cool and a little different for the genre. I also like the idea of the “witchery” and that magic comes in all different kinds of forms and abilities. It reminds me in a good way of Graceling, and how people had various graces that gave them a variety of special gifts. Add in that dash of war and revenge, and I’m sold! Can’t wait to get started on this!

When the world is about to end, do you still keep fighting? From the moment, Kamala put on her costume, she’s been challenged, but nothing has prepared her for this: the Last Days of the Marvel Universe. Fists up, let’s do this, Jersey City. Plus a VERY special guest appearance fans have been clamoring for!

COLLECTING: MS. MARVEL #16-19, MATERIAL FROM AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #7-8

I don’t know how many people who do the weekly WoW’s are comic book fans, but I have to say, I think the new Ms. Marvel is someone that all fiction readers can relate to and enjoy. Kamala Khan is the perfect heroine for our society, and I think she’s a wonderful representation of teens and Americans today. She’s got such a weight on her shoulders, yet she is written with so much grace and humor. The illustrations are phenomenal and I’m so excited to see what challenge she is going to face next. The premise gives me quite a bit of pause though… the last days of the Marvel Universe???? Noooooo, please, noooo!!! I want many more adventures with this awesome heroine! Also, that special guest… come on, it HAS to be my other girl Carol Danvers!?! Right? She’s only Kamala’s idol, and you know that’s who everyone wants it to be… You better make me happy Marvel!
