Literary Character Halloween Costumes

So, Halloween is fast approaching and I have never been that big on celebrating it, or dressing up. In fact, I don’t think I’ve really tried to create a costume in a very long time, and mostly I’ve half-assed it. (Forgive my cussing, but it’s the truth.) Last year, a delightful blog called The Broke and the Bookish put out an idea which caught my attention, asking what the Top 10 characters are that I would want to be for Halloween… a very good question. Who ARE the fictional book characters that I might want to be for the day? Of course, narrowing it down to just 10 might be tough,  so here’s round 1…

Round 1: Children’s Book Characters:

AnnabethChase

Annabeth Chase
From: The Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan

Why Annabeth?

In spite of the Yankees cap (I’m a Red Sox supporter), this would be an easy costume to pull together (I already own a camp half-blood T shirt). Add some jeans, and perhaps a fake sword and I’d be good to go. Also, she is one of the smartest, toughest, and most awesome characters in children’s/young adult lit. How could I NOT want to go as her?

Hermione with bookHermione Granger
From: The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Why Hermione?

This one is another big fat DUH! She is perhaps one of the greatest literary characters of all time (regardless of age or genre) and she would be fairly easy to piece together a costume for as well. Perhaps the reason she’s not first on my list is because I’ve done another Harry Potter character for Halloween before (Ginny, because my hair already is straight and a bit red). But that also means I’ve already got the gear if I want to give the HP world another go…

Lucy PevensieLucy Pevensie
From: The Chronicles of Narnia

Why Lucy?

Lucy has always been my favorite of the Pevensie children. She’s the one who believed first, and who believed longest, who never wavered in her desire to be a part of Narnia. I love the innocence and faith that she represents in these stories. I also think she got more enjoyment out of this world than the others. She would also be fairly easy to dress as, because I would simply need an old fashioned dress and sweater, and perhaps a bow or clip for my hair. And of course a small jewel-like flash for the potion that Aslan gave her.

Ms. FrizzleMs. Frizzle
From: The Magic School Bus series by Joanna Cole

Why Ms. Frizzle?

Outside of her sheer awesomeness, Ms. Frizzle is a character I feel like I could totally pull off! Shaping the wacky hairdos and finding myself a stuffed lizard companion might be a bit tricky, but I’m sure I could find a wacky-patterned dress and some crazy earrings and talk about the wonders of science. I think this would be a big hit as a costume, and would be so much fun to wear!

MadelineMadeline
From: The Madeline series by Ludwig Bemelmans

Why Madeline?

Once again, I feel like this would be a fun, and fairly simple costume to put together… A navy dress with short white gloves, white knee-socks and black shoes. The yellow hat would probably be the trickiest part to get my hands on. Then just a little hair dye and I’m in business. I think people would get a real kick out of seeing a Madeline costume, she’s such a staple of so many people’s childhoods. I would have a blast as her.

Lowly WormLowly Worm
From: The Busy World of Richard Scarry

Why Lowly?

This one I would do for fun, especially if I were going to a party with a bunch of friends or people in my age group (or people who have kids). Because I think Lowly would get a lot of attention. As a costume, this would be a lot harder to pull together. Getting green pants and red high tops would be difficult. So would that crazy little hat. Also, if I wanted to be really authentic, I would probably have to find a way to tie my feet together and hop around (because Lowly only has the one leg, of course).

nancy drewNancy Drew
From: The Nancy Drew series by Carolyn Keene

Why Nancy?

She’s such a classic children’s literature character, and her look is pretty iconic. While it might be a pain to try and curl my hair a la the 50’s styling, finding a poofy, collared, old-fashioned dress wouldn’t present much of a challenge. I might also see if I could find a toy car like hers just to be cute. Add a magnifying glass just for those who don’t “get it” right away and I think I’d be all set. I’d probably have to practice my “surprised” face so that I look like all the

Fancy NancyFancy Nancy
From: The Fancy Nancy series by Jane O’Connor

Why Nancy?

THIS Nancy would be a riot to dress up as because I could go all-out. Nancy loves to dress up, so I would definitely want to find some grown-up, dress-up clothes (maybe even a tutu) and find lots of sparkly hair pieces and jewelry. Nancy has so many delightful outfits to choose from. Anyone with girly-girls would probably recognize me. And in general I just think this one would be a blast.

Sister BearSister Bear
From: The Berenstain Bears series by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Why Sister Bear?

The Berenstain Bears are some of the most iconic literary characters of my childhood, and I can’t even describe how many videos and books I consumed that were about these lovely bears. Sister Bear was my favorite of the family, so I would want to dress like her. She also probably had the most recognizable look of the family, which would probably be difficult for me to replicate. Pink overalls are not very easy to come by, especially not with a matching pink polka-dot shirt. That would take some doing. But I be the reaction I got from friends and family would be worth it!

Sara Crewe a Little PrincessSara Crewe
From: A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Why Sara?

Sara Crewe has been one of my longtime favorite characters, and her story has been wonderfully recreated on film. I think wearing an outfit from the time period of this story (takes place during WWI) would be really interesting and fun. I would want to try for an outfit from before she becomes an orphan (or perhaps do the outfit from when Ram Dass decorates her and Becky’s attic room, and he leaves them beautiful robes and slippers). In any case, it would be fun to live out this fantasy and pair whatever outfit with her signature locket and her doll Emily.

This Week’s Theme: What was your Favorite Lupin Moment?

There are a lot of great moments for the character of Remus Lupin. He’s such a wonderful person, and I appreciated that all of his struggles just served to make him a more giving person. From the moment he enters Harry’s life, Lupin is a calming influence, and he genuinely cares about his well-being.

lupin and harry 1So the “moment” I picked as my favorite is actually a series of small moments between Lupin and Harry. They are quieter moments when Lupin finds Harry in some kind of mental or emotional turmoil, and he gives him some kind of piece of mind.

“Wait a moment, Harry,” Lupin called. “I’d like a word.”

Harry doubled back and watched Professor Lupin covering the hinkypunk’s box with a cloth.

“I heard about the match,” said Lupin, turning back to his desk and starting to pile books into his briefcase, “and I’m sorry about your broomstick. Is there any chance of fixing it?”

lupin and Harry 3“No,” said Harry. “The tree smashed it to bits.”

Lupin sighed. (Prisoner of Azkaban, 186)   . . .

“Did you hear about the dementors too?” said Harry with difficulty.

Lupin looked at him quickly.

“Yes, I did. I don’t think any of us have seen Professor Dumbledore that angry. They ave been growing restless for some time… furious at his refusal to let them inside the grounds. … I suppose they were the reason you fell?”

“Yes,” said Harry. He hesitated, and then the question he had to ask burst from him before he could stop himself. “Why? Why do they affect me like that? Am I just –?”

“It has nothing to do with weakness,” said Professor Lupin sharply, as though he had read Harry’s mind. “The dementors affect you worse than the others because there are horrors in your past that the others don’t have.” (186-187)

Lupin and Harry 2“You made the dementor on the train back off,” said Harry suddenly.

“There are — certain defenses one can use,” said Lupin. “But there was only one dementor on the train. The more there are, the more difficult it becomes to resist.”

“What defenses?” said Harry at once. “Can you teach me?”

“I don’t pretend to be an expert on fighting dementors, Harry… quite the contrary. …”

“But if the dementors come to another Quidditch match, I need to be able to fight them –”

“Lupin looked at Harry’s determined face, hesitated, then said, “Well … all right. I’ll try and help. But it’ll have to wait until next term, I’m afraid. I have a lot to do before the holidays. I chose a very inconvenient time to fall ill.” (188-189)

Lupin is, with so few words, able to give Harry more piece of mind than he is able to find on his own. Harry’s dealing with events so beyond what a 13-year-old should have to deal with and Lupin not only gives him comfort with words but also the physical tools to build back his confidence and adjust to these overwhelming situations. He also gives Harry his first real, tangible connection to his parents, something he’s wanted desperately. So those moments between the two of them, where he finds that connection, are my favorite. I also think that in some way these scenes gives Lupin that same feeling of connection and belonging, which he’s seldom experienced since he lost all of his old friends.

Runner Up for Favorite Moment:

Lupin riddikulus

I think the third year class taking on a boggart might have been one of everybody’s favorite scenes because it was so much fun. Lupin was the first professor that showed us as an audience and his students that Defense Against the Dark Arts could be fun as well as a learning experience. Not that he was ever really unsafe with them. I always enjoyed how well he did as a teacher. He walked the right line between understanding the seriousness behind the course with also making the students feel good about the learning process.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on what your favorite Lupin moment in the comments below!

This Week’s Theme: If you had to use one, which Unforgivable Curse would you use?

unforgivable curses

Frankly, I wouldn’t want to use any of these curses. Much as I might act a bit bloodthirsty on occasion, and I fully believe I’m capable of hurting or even killing someone in defense of myself or my family, I would never want to be put in a position where I would have to use something like these means of hurting others. There’s a reason they’re Unforgivable.

the killing curseI suppose that if I had no choice and had to pick one, I’d probably just use the Avada Kedavra, The Killing Curse. While this might seem like a weird choice, choosing the most final and awful of all the curses, I do have my reasons. First, I think I would only use an Unforgivable Curse in the most dire of circumstances when I felt like my back was against a wall and/or my life (or the lives of my friends and family) was in danger. I believe taking a life is acceptable in that kind of situation. If it’s your life on the line, I believe in doing what you have to in order to protect yourself.

Second, I think the suffering from the other two curses, are often more prolonged causing greater harm over a longer period of time. Either one is torture, and while I might believe in taking someone’s life in an extreme situation, I don’t believe in torture. The Cruciatus Curse is the embodiment of physical torture. There’s no way around it, it is pain for the sake of pain, and it’s disgusting. Neville’s parents were literally tortured into insanity using this curse. I don’t think I could bring myself to use it.

And the Imperius Curse may seem like the least of all the evils, but when you think about it, you’re forcing someone to act against their own will, sometimes for extended periods of time. If they ever regain their own free will, how much guilt and pain will they spend the rest of their life carrying around? It’s mental torture. Not to mention, taking over someone’s mind against their will seems like a kind of rape and I just don’t think I’m capable of that either. At least with the Killing Curse, it’s clean and quick. Sudden death. So that’s my choice I guess. There may be no coming back from it, but I think it’s the one I could actual live with myself for committing.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on what Unforgivable Curse you would choose to use in the comments below!

This Week’s Theme: Which Death Eater would you be?

So, a while back we were asked the question of who your favorite Death Eater was, and in truly nerdy fashion, I took a quiz to determine which Death Eater resonated the most with me, and I got this guy…

Barty Crouch Jr quiz result

Of course, I just took it again minutes ago, and I got the same answer. If I were a Death Eater, I’d be one of the only loyal, non-screw-ups there were on this team of baddies. Sure he got his soul sucked out of him for his troubles by the Dementor’s Kiss, but at least you could say he was actually getting sh*t done. Also, he’s a damn good wizard for all that he’s a bad guy. He was strong enough to fight off the Imperius curse, he impersonated one of the strongest good guys around right under Dumbledore’s nose for months with no one the wiser, and he rigged the Triwizard Tournament to bring about old Voldy’s return. (Finally.) I could definitely do worse.

This Week’s Theme: Who would you take to the Yule Ball?

Okay, this was a pretty easy question for me to answer. And as much as I love my guy Harry, he was totally at that age where he wasn’t ready for a formal dance. You only have to look at this to see…

Harry and Ron Yule BallNo offense to anyone who loves these boys (I do too) but they were total Debbie-Downers just because they couldn’t go with their ideal date. Um, welcome to teenage-dom boys. They could have made an effort to have a good time, but they didn’t. So, much as I adore them, nope. At this stage of the game, they’re not for me.

weasley twins ball weasley twins ball 2So, who would I pick? One of these two boys of course.

A. They’re hilarious.

B. They’re older so there’s bound to be less emo-drama, due to more maturity… sort of.

And C. Look at them! They’re adorable and clearly intend to have themselves some FUN! That’s exactly what I would want in my date to a dance like this. Someone who is bound and determined to have fun.

I really don’t see how I could make any other choice. Unless, perhaps I decided to go with their friend Jordan, who I’m also guessing would want to have a good time. Perhaps we would all hang out together, and maybe get kicked out when one of them attempts a practical joke, or spikes the punch.

Any way you look at it, I bet I’d have a good night.

This Week’s Theme: Free Week – Favorite Hogwarts House

ravenclaw wit beyond measureUm, yeah, this is going to be a short one for ya’ll. I’m Ravenclaw, all the way! Pretty much every Sorting test I’ve ever taken has put me in this house, and I’ve always been a fan of being a smarty-pants. Add the (mostly) straight A’s from my years of schooling, the fact that I actually LIKE school and learning, and
voluntarily went back to get not one but 2 master’s degrees… Yep. This is my house, these are my people.

Ravenclaw_Crest_1I think we get a bit of a bad rap, because, yes, we like to be right. But what’s more is that this is a group of people that is driven to learn and grow, constantly. We are the kind of people who know that there is never an end to learning something new, about yourself or about your world. So we always have the opportunity to change and become better.

I also like that this is a house that’s not just about intelligence, and book learning, but about creative thinking and finding clever solutions to your problems.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on what your favorite Hogwarts House is in the comments below!

This Week’s Theme: What was the best Sirius moment?

For me, the best moment with Sirius came early on in the series. After Harry first finds out that Black wasn’t the one who betrayed his family and he is able to envision a happy future with his godfather.

Harry and Sirius“You know what this means?” Sirius said abruptly to Harry as they made their slow progress along the tunnel. “Turning Pettigrew in?”

“You’re free,” said Harry.

“Yes …,” said Sirius. “But I’m also — I don’t know if anyone ever told you — I’m your godfather.”

“Yeah, I knew that,” said Harry.

“Well … your parents appointed me your guardian,” said Sirius stiffly. “If anything happened to them …”

Harry waited. Did Sirius mean what he thought he meant?

“I’ll understand, of course, if you want to stay with your aunt and uncle,” said Sirius. “But … well … think about it. Once my name’s cleared … if you wanted a … a different home …”

Some sort of explosion took place in the pit of Harry’s stomach.

“What — live with you?” he said, accidentally cracking his head on a bit of rock protruding from the ceiling. “Leave the Dursleys?”

“Of course, I thought you wouldn’t want to,” said Sirius quickly. “I understand, I just thought I’d –”

“Are you insane?” said Harry, his voice easily as croaky as Sirius’s. “Of course I want to leave the Dursleys! Have you got a house? When can I move in?” (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, pg. 378-379)

Of course things go to crap pretty quickly after this, but I always loved the hope that this moment represented not only for Harry, but also for Sirius. It’s the hope that the weight he’s been carrying for all these years will be lifted, and he is truly able to smile and envision a happy future for the two of them. It’s a moment of possibility and freedom. This moment is part of what made this book so special when I read it.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on what your favorite ‘Sirius Moment’ was in the comments below!

This Week’s Theme: Most anticipated moment?

It took me a minute to figure out what was meant by ‘most anticipated’ moment. I don’t really do much anticipating with books, I like being surprised by the things that happen, and I don’t often “count on” something occurring because that ruins the fun a bit for me. But with certain genres you can anticipate certain tropes or plot moments so and the one thing that I knew was eventually going to happen with this series was this…

voldemort and harry duel 1voldemort and harry duel

The final battle between Voldemort and Harry Potter was pretty much the only thing that was a guarantee throughout the entire series, so I’m going to choose this as my most anticipated moment. I wasn’t sure of the how, the when, the where, or what it would be, but some kind of showdown was inevitable, especially once old Voldy got his corporeal form back. He would never stop coming after Harry, and Harry would never let him try to take over the world without doing something to stop him. It was inevitable due to their natures. It’s who they are. And I must say, reading this part of the books, I was transfixed. I couldn’t stop reading, and soaking it all in. I thought the Battle of Hogwarts was one of the best battle scenes I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a LOT of battle scenes with all my fantasy books). The movie version was definitely cool, too, but it wasn’t exactly like I’d pictured it in my head. I really would have enjoyed it better if they’d had everyone watching like in the books. The visual effects during the wand duel above were pretty awesome though.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on what your most anticipated moment was in the comments below!

This Week’s Theme: What Character would you erase if you could?

So, as the previous week might have suggested, I don’t think I’d really want to erase any of the characters from this series, as I love them all, even when they are flawed. Even when I don’t like them, I think they served a really great purpose in the story. So the idea of getting rid of any of them seems a bit absurd. That being said, there is one character that I really soured towards over the course of several re-reads… Cho Chang.

cho chang

Now, here’s my reasoning. I would get rid of Cho Chang because honestly, she serves little to no purpose in the overall scheme of the series. She’s Harry’s first crush, and when we first meet Cho, I can see why. She’s smart, pretty, she’s an athelete on the Quidditch field and that’s someone Harry can admire. I liked that. But as things happen, and you get to see more of her, there’s nothing in her personality to appreciate. After Cedric’s death she becomes one of those obnoxious females who’s rather weak-willed, easily jealous, and hung up on the past. I mean, I get it. She lost someone she loved and she’s young. But I disliked the character choices for her, she stops being able to play, does poorly in school, and caves under pressure. Maybe some see her as being “loyal” to her friend, but I just don’t care. She doesn’t grow through her struggles, she crumbles. I can’t get into her as a character. I don’t find anything redeeming about her in the long run, she just kind of fades. I feel like, of everyone in the series, Harry’s world would not miss this incarnation of her.

That being said, I don’t necessarily think I’d want to get rid of her or erase her entirely. Just this version of her. I’d like her better if she hadn’t been such a blubbery mess that was hung up on comparing Harry to her dead boyfriend. It would have been cool if she’d been just a little bit stronger, and then perhaps the new version of her character could have joined Harry and the DA at the Ministry. He could have experienced his first girlfriend and maybe not been so emo throughout book 5, and then maybe when they went home for the summer they could have broken things off because long distance relationships suck, and maybe Cho would have found someone new in the summer. Or she could have understood that dating someone while you’re still grieving over a lost love is a bad idea, and just turned him down entirely. Then later on in the series, maybe she could have been a little more involved in the final Battle of Hogwarts, because as she is written, I really don’t care about what happened to her.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on what character you would get rid of in the comments below!
