Tess Kendrick, teen fixer extraordinaire, returns in a pulse-pounding thriller about a deadly conspiracy at the heart of Washington.

For Tess Kendrick, a junior at the elite Hardwicke School in Washington D.C., fixing runs in the family. But Tess has another legacy, too, one that involves power and the making of political dynasties. When Tess is asked to run a classmate’s campaign for student council, she agrees. But when the candidates are children of politicians, even a high school election can involve life-shattering secrets.

Meanwhile, Tess’s guardian has also taken on an impossible case, as a terrorist attack calls into doubt who can–and cannot–be trusted on Capitol Hill. Tess knows better than most that power is currency in D.C., but she’s about to discover first-hand that power always comes with a price.

Perfect for fans of Harlan Coben and Ally Carter, the second book in this thrilling series will leave readers breathless.

I think the first book (The Fixer) seemed to come out of nowhere in how amazing it was, but I’d read Barnes’s Naturals series so I was aware of the twisty mind games she’s capable of playing on her audience. That being said, I was still blown away by how much I really enjoyed book 1. This one, I feel is going to up the stakes even more. Now that we know how tricksy some of these characters can be, I feel like things are just going to get deeper in their development and plot-wise Barnes can up the danger factor to bring on the thrills. AND I CAN’T WAIT! I love the way she builds suspense, and from the description (high school election, terrorist attacks, and power that comes with a price) there’s no way this book is going to disappoint. I say Bring. It. On! Sooner rather than later, lol!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Rebel of the Sands and The Great Hunt

“You will cheer for Amani the whole way as she escapes the bonds of oppression and finds her own power, and you will mark your calendar for the sequel.”—Rae Carson, bestselling author of the Fire & Thorns trilogy

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic.  For humans, it’s an unforgiving place, especially if you’re poor, orphaned, or female.

Amani Al’Hiza is all three.  She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.

Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she’s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she’d gallop away on mythical horse—or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

Rebel of the Sands reveals what happens when a dream deferred explodes—in the fires of rebellion, of romantic passion, and the all-consuming inferno of a girl finally, at long last, embracing her power.

Mythical beasts, djinn, gunslingers, and a rebellion? Sign me up please! I’m really excited to find out more about the heroine, Amani. A girl embracing her power… and the setting sounds fantastic. I’m such a sucker for great world-building and I really hope this story can deliver the way it sounds.

And now, since there are so many wonderful books out there, here’s a second book I’m waiting for…

The Great HuntThe Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins

Hardcover, 416 pages
Publication Date: Mar. 8th, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
ISBN: 9780062381330

Kill the beast. Win the girl.

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity understands her duty to the kingdom though it pains her to imagine marrying a stranger. It would be foolish to set her sights on any particular man in the great hunt, but when a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention, there’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not keen on marriage. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast and protecting his family—yet Princess Aerity continues to challenge his notions with her unpredictability and charm. But as past secrets collide with present desires, dire choices threaten everything Paxton holds dear.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale, “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, outlawed magic, and a princess willing to risk all to save her people.

I’m deeply interested in this story, especially the fact that it’s inspired by a fairy tale (my favorite!) And I like the fact that this seems to be a lesser-known one, instead of one of the biggies. It sounds so dramatic and full of magic and I’m already a fan.

Stars of Fortune (The Guardians Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts

BOOK ONE OF THE GUARDIANS TRILOGY

To celebrate the rise of their new queen, three goddesses of the moon created three stars, one of fire, one of ice, one of water. But then they fell from the sky, putting the fate of all worlds in danger. And now three women and three men join forces to pick up the pieces…

Sasha Riggs is a reclusive artist, haunted by dreams and nightmares that she turns into extraordinary paintings. Her visions lead her to the Greek island of Corfu, where five others have been lured to seek the fire star. Sasha recognizes them, because she has drawn them: a magician, an archaeologist, a wanderer, a fighter, a loner. All on a quest. All with secrets.

Sasha is the one who holds them together—the seer. And in the magician, Bran Killian, she sees a man of immense power and compassion. As Sasha struggles with her rare ability, Bran is there to support her, challenge her, and believe in her.

But Sasha and Bran are just two of the six. And they all must all work together as a team to find the fire star in a cradle of land beneath the sea. Over their every attempt at trust, unity, and love, a dark threat looms. And it seeks to corrupt everything that stands in its way of possessing the stars…

New Nora Roberts trilogy… YAY!! More love and magic mixed together. I love the sound of these people, and that there are goddesses, and I’m really hoping that my Queen of Romance is delving into the realm of Greek mythology with this new series of hers. I cannot wait to get my hands on this new book. Nobody melds magic, romance, and danger like Nora Roberts. Bring it on! P.S. that cover is so pretty!!!

Teaser Tuesdays: The Storyspinner

Teaser Tuesdays

It’s time for another “Teaser Tuesday!”

This feature (or meme)  is one I originally discovered on my friend Kim’s site Book Munchies, and is hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm. For those of you who would like to play along at home (or more specifically on your homepage), here is how Teaser Tuesdays work.

– Grab (one of) your current read(s) and open it to a random page
– Share a couple “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
– BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

—> Now on to the main event!

“Explain this,” he commanded.

In the latest Kate Daniels novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, magic is coming and going in waves in post-Shift Atlanta—and each crest leaves danger in its wake…

After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Curran misses the constant challenges of leading the shapeshifters.

So when the Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild, Curran seizes the opportunity—too bad the Guild wants nothing to do with him and Kate. Luckily, as a veteran merc, Kate can take over any of the Guild’s unfinished jobs in order to bring in money and build their reputation. But what Kate and Curran don’t realize is that the odd jobs they’ve been working are all connected.

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece…

YAY!! I’m so excited to see what happens with Kate and Curran now that they’re no longer a part of the pack! I was so surprised with the end of the last book when that was the condition of Kate’s dad not taking over the city, and the fact the Curran left with/for her?!?! (*deep romantic sigh*) I love these two as a couple, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they interact without all the politics of the Pack entwined in their relationship. Although, I doubt they’re going to be completely cut off from the rest of the shifters. That just seems unlikely. But regardless, I’m really curious and excited to find out what waits for these two now that they’ve confronted Kate’s dad, and her heritage is sort of out there for all the world to see!

Drama and danger abound in this fantasy realm where dukes play a game for the throne, magical warriors race to find the missing heir, and romance blossoms where it is least expected.

In a world where dukes plot their way to the throne, a Performer’s life can get tricky. And in Johanna Von Arlo’s case, it can be fatal. Expelled from her troupe after her father’s death, Johanna is forced to work for the handsome Lord Rafael DeSilva. Too bad they don’t get along. But while Johanna’s father’s death was deemed an accident, the Keepers aren’t so sure.

The Keepers, a race of people with magical abilities, are on a quest to find the princess—the same princess who is supposed to be dead and whose throne the dukes are fighting over. But they aren’t the only ones looking for her. And in the wake of their search, murdered girls keep turning up—girls who look exactly like the princess, and exactly like Johanna.

With dukes, Keepers, and a killer all after the princess, Johanna finds herself caught up in political machinations for the throne, threats on her life, and an unexpected romance that could change everything.

There is so much that is drawing me into this story; magical warriors, political intrigue, and romance? Yup all these things sound right up my alley! Also, the cover is pretty awesome too. I like that it’s a bit blurry and that this girl (presumably the main character) is a bow-and-arrow kind of warrior. (Yay! I love those ones!) Plus, does any one who reads this NOT suspect that Johanna might be this missing princess? It would be really cool if she wasn’t, though. Now that would be an interesting way to turn a stereotypical fantasy trope on it’s head. But either way, I have a feeling I’m really going to enjoy this. I’m hoping for lots and lots of action, daring escapes and murky plots. *sigh of anticipation* I can’t wait to check it out!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Empire of Shadows

Empire of Shadows (Bhinian Empire, #2) by Miriam Forster

Cast out of her family three years ago, Mara turned to the only place that would take her—a school where students train to protect others. But Mara is stunned when guarding a noble girl in the Empire’s capital turns out to be more dangerous than she could’ve imagined. More shocking still, she finds the boy she thought she had lost forever outside the gates of her new home.

Mara knew her life in the dizzying Imperial city would hold dangers. How could she have known that her heart, as well as her life, would be at stake?

Empire of Shadows will take readers on a spellbinding journey into the world Miriam Forster first introduced in City of a Thousand Dolls—a world with a divided society, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and deeply laid conspiracies.

Mmmmm. Fantasy, intrigue, and danger lurking around every corner… Yup, this one is going to be right up my alley! I was so surprised with how much I enjoyed City of a Thousand Dolls when I read it earlier this past year. I thought the mystery in it was fantastic, and the fantasy world was vivid and well-built with intricate histories that are bound to wreak havoc on this next chapter in the series. And can I just stop for a moment to appreciate that GORGEOUS cover?? … Okay, I’m done basking. I know this one has a new set of characters and that always makes me nervous, especially when you grow to love the first set and then they disappear. But I’m confident that Forster has some great plans up her sleeve and I doubt we’ve seen the last of those characters. So I’ll wait, and hopefully discover new ones to love.
