Tess Kendrick, teen fixer extraordinaire, returns in a pulse-pounding thriller about a deadly conspiracy at the heart of Washington.

For Tess Kendrick, a junior at the elite Hardwicke School in Washington D.C., fixing runs in the family. But Tess has another legacy, too, one that involves power and the making of political dynasties. When Tess is asked to run a classmate’s campaign for student council, she agrees. But when the candidates are children of politicians, even a high school election can involve life-shattering secrets.

Meanwhile, Tess’s guardian has also taken on an impossible case, as a terrorist attack calls into doubt who can–and cannot–be trusted on Capitol Hill. Tess knows better than most that power is currency in D.C., but she’s about to discover first-hand that power always comes with a price.

Perfect for fans of Harlan Coben and Ally Carter, the second book in this thrilling series will leave readers breathless.

I think the first book (The Fixer) seemed to come out of nowhere in how amazing it was, but I’d read Barnes’s Naturals series so I was aware of the twisty mind games she’s capable of playing on her audience. That being said, I was still blown away by how much I really enjoyed book 1. This one, I feel is going to up the stakes even more. Now that we know how tricksy some of these characters can be, I feel like things are just going to get deeper in their development and plot-wise Barnes can up the danger factor to bring on the thrills. AND I CAN’T WAIT! I love the way she builds suspense, and from the description (high school election, terrorist attacks, and power that comes with a price) there’s no way this book is going to disappoint. I say Bring. It. On! Sooner rather than later, lol!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Passenger

Waiting on Wednesdays

Waiting on Wednesdays is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine. The purpose is to spotlight upcoming book releases that we are excited for.

Passenger (Passenger, #1) by Alexandra Bracken

Hardcover, 464 pages
Publication Date: Jan. 5th, 2016

ISBN: 9781484715772

passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them— whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home . . . forever

Okay, yikes. Wednesday snuck up on me this week. But anyways, this sounds really interesting to me! I like that in this fantasy/sci-fi story (I’m not really clear which category this falls into yet) neither character appears all that powerful. Its kind of a nice change from a long string of stories I’ve been reading where characters have “powers they’ve never discovered before now” or are just really strong, or royalty so they have influence they can wield. These two don’t seem to have any of those things going for them, and yet they seem to be going on a quest of sorts — all of which is very cool. It will be interesting to see how they survive (if they survive) and how they will be helped on their journey.

Shelby Foxworth lost her husband. Then she lost her illusions…

The man who took her from Tennessee to an exclusive Philadelphia suburb left her in crippling debt. He was an adulterer and a liar, and when Shelby tracks down his safe-deposit box, she finds multiple IDs. The man she loved wasn’t just dead. He never really existed.

Shelby takes her three-year-old daughter and heads south to seek comfort in her hometown, where she meets someone new: Griff Lott, a successful contractor. But her husband had secrets she has yet to discover. Even in this small town, surrounded by loved ones, danger is closer than she knows–and threatens Griff, as well. And an attempted murder is only the beginning…

I just love Nora Roberts. I don’t really care what the book is about, if she wrote it, I’m gonna read it. LOL, but they all sound so intriguing so it’s never a hardship either. I like the premise of this latest mystery/romance as well. The multiple IDs part really caught my attention, and it makes me wonder if this woman’s husband is really dead… Hmmm, I guess we shall see…

Teaser Tuesdays: Storm’s Heart

Teaser Tuesdays

It’s time for another “Teaser Tuesday!”

This feature (or meme)  is one I discovered on my friend Kim’s site Book Munchies, and is hosted by MizB of the Should Be Reading blog. For those of you who would like to play along at home (or more specifically on your homepage), here is how Teaser Tuesdays work.

– Grab (one of) your current read(s) and open it to a random page
– Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
– BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
– Remember to include the title & author, too, so that your followers and any Teaser Tuesday participants can add the book to their reading lists if your tease has captured their attention!

Wilhelmina has a hundred identities.

She is a princess. When the Indigo Kingdom conquered her homeland, Wilhelmina and other orphaned children of nobility were taken to Skyvale, the Indigo Kingdom’s capital. Ten years later, they are the Ospreys, experts at stealth and theft. With them, Wilhelmina means to take back her throne.

She is a spy. Wil and her best friend, Melanie, infiltrate Skyvale Palace to study their foes. They assume the identities of nobles from a wraith-fallen kingdom, but enemies fill the palace, and Melanie’s behavior grows suspicious. With Osprey missions becoming increasingly dangerous and their leader more unstable, Wil can’t trust anyone.

She is a threat. Wraith is the toxic by-product of magic, and for a century using magic has been forbidden. Still the wraith pours across the continent, reshaping the land and animals into fresh horrors. Soon it will reach the Indigo Kingdom. Wilhelmina’s magic might be the key to stopping the wraith, but if the vigilante Black Knife discovers Wil’s magic, she will vanish like all the others

Jodi Meadows introduces a vivid new fantasy full of intrigue, romance, dangerous magic, and one girl’s battle to reclaim her place in the world.

Intrigue is definitely the word that this premise brings to mind. I’m so curious about this kingdom, and it’s Spy/Princess and what her magic is. I’m especially curious about this Wraith magic and how it works, and how it is warping the kingdom. I’m also intrigued by the fact that there doesn’t seem to be an overt love-interest… unless that interest is the Wil’s friend Melanie, and either way, it makes me pumped to check this book out. I’ve also been hearing great things from people who’ve gotten their hands on ARCs, so it sounds like all cylinders are a-go! I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

“Waiting On” Wednesdays: Rites of Passage

Rites of Passage by Joy Hensley

Sam McKenna’s never turned down a dare. And she’s not going to start with the last one her brother gave her before he died.

So Sam joins the first-ever class of girls at the prestigious Denmark Military Academy. She’s expecting push-ups and long runs, rope climbing and mud-crawling. As a military brat, she can handle an obstacle course just as well as the boys. She’s even expecting the hostility she gets from some of the cadets who don’t think girls belong there. What she’s not expecting is her fiery attraction to her drill sergeant. But dating is strictly forbidden and Sam won’t risk her future, or the dare, on something so petty…no matter how much she wants him.

As Sam struggles to prove herself, she discovers that some of the boys don’t just want her gone—they will stop at nothing to drive her out. When their petty threats turn to brutal hazing, bleeding into every corner of her life, she realizes they are not acting alone. A decades-old secret society is alive and active… and determined to force her out.

At any cost.

Now time’s running short. Sam must decide who she can trust…and choosing the wrong person could have deadly consequences.

What makes me look forward to Rites of Passage is that it doesn’t sound like any other book I’ve read a synopsis of in recent memory. It sounds a little G.I. Jane, but not quite. Plus… mystery and intrigue and a secret society?? Sign me up! But a story that seems part mystery and part realistic fiction will be a nice breath of fresh air among all my fantasies and paranormal stories. I hope it’s as thrilling as the synopsis makes it sound!
