Harry Potter Moment of the Week #13

HPMOTW (2)

This is a meme started by Uncorked Thoughts which aims to share with fellow bloggers a weekly slice of HP awesomeness. It is an awesomeness that only increases with time and number of reads. Once a week we will share a character, spell, chapter, object, quote etc. from the books/films/J. K. Rowling (or anything Potter related)! Each topic will be posted on Uncorked Thoughts HERE. There will also be  free weeks where everyone can share whatever topic they want! Be sure to share your link on the main site for all other HP MOTW fans to enjoy!

This Week’s Theme: Best Luna Moment

Luna Lovegood

THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM!!!!

lol, Sorry for the strong reaction, but with a character like Luna, how? How do you choose a singular best moment from her repertoire? Look at all these fantastic moments she has… (and these are all from just one book!)

It’s almost painful to have to pick just one. There are so many things I love about Luna. Her quirkiness, which of course is one of the first things you notice about her. It’s hard not to be taken aback by her, and to have moments where you just go… “Huh. Well that was different.” I also like that, in spite of that quirk, she’s actually a very quiet soul. She’s not brash, or looking to stand out, she’s just forging her own path, and more than any other character, she seems so content with her self. I think that’s perhaps the part of her I like the most. How steady and unwavering she is, how comfortable in her own skin. It’s really something to admire.

And I have to admit some bias on my part, but part of my likes her because she’s a fellow Ravenclaw. (thank-you Pottermore Sorting Hat!) I love that the hat recognized her for the delightfully offbeat intelligence that she showcases at almost every turn. And I think one of the best moments she has, where you really see how truly smart she is, is this one here:

They looked at each other. Luna was smiling slightly. Harry did not know what to say, or to think. Luna believed so many extraordinary things… yet he had been sure he heard voices behind the veil too…

“Are you sure you don’t want me to help you look for your stuff?” he said.

“Oh no,” said Luna. “No, I think I’ll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up. … It always does in the end. … Well, have a nice holiday, Harry.”

“Yeah… yeah, you too.”

She walked away from him, and as he watched her go, he found that the terrible weight in his stomach seemed to have lessened slightly.       – Order of the Phoenix, 863-864

things we lose 2things we lose 1

It is this moment (which is almost unchanged in circumstance from book to movie) that I think we really get a glimpse of just how much is going on under the surface with Luna. Her words are simple, but they are some of the first to bring Harry any measure of comfort after his loss. And at the same time, she really makes him open his eyes to this person that he might have written off in the past, and make him think in a new way. So much impact for such a small moment. That’s why I love Luna.

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own best Luna moment in the comments below!

  1. She’s this level headed no nonsense kind of girl that Harry needed most at that time. No promises of better and stuff. I think here they truly realized they were friends and appreciated one another, which was so sweet 🙂 I think Luna in very complicated inside, just wish we0d see more of it. 🙂

    1. I agree. Sometimes I’m sad that we didn’t get the opportunity to see her earlier in the series. She’s Ginny’s age, and clearly they knew each other, so it would have been nice to see the two of them hanging out, so that later on we could get more of her awesome depth.

    1. Yeah, it’s true. I think she, more than most characters, relates better to Harry because she can share some of his pain over losing a parent. I think she’s just channeled her emotions better than him, and so it makes her much smarter than other kids who haven’t dealt with similar losses. Also, I think it helps that her dad clearly encourages her unique pursuits, and gives her the space to learn creatively.

  2. ”she’s actually a very quiet soul” ♥ OMG yes, that’s one of my main reasons for loving her as much as I do. She’s never harsh and despite saying odd things, she’s quite soft and so, so considerate. She’s so unashamedly herself, it never ceases to warm my heart 🙂

I adore the moment you picked too, for the same reasons that I picked my moment: with so few words and such simplicity, she manages to reach Harry when he most needed it. Her smallest of moments have the biggest meaning!

  3. Luna just has this way of saying the most profound things in a few simple words and seeing straight into the heart of everyone. I also love her for the more offbeat stuff she comes up with, and how it doesn’t matter if everybody else doesn’t quite view the world the way she does. 🙂
